The Epistemic Engineering Platform has been at the forefront of reimagining academic publishing and research tools since its inception. What started as an open-source, non-profit initiative by historians, philosophers, and sociologists of science has evolved into a complex ecosystem of innovative scholarly tools, open peer-review journals, and AI-driven publishing solutions. Here’s a look at how the platform has grown over the years.

🔹 2018-2020: The Foundation Years

The project was launched in 2018 with a clear mission: to develop new models for academic publishing by leveraging insights from science studies and integrating modern technological solutions. The platform’s first website was built to experiment with alternative publishing frameworks, focusing on open-access knowledge, peer review reform, and digital scholarship.

By 2020, EEP secured its first major funding and institutional partnerships with A*MIDEX, laying the groundwork for its expansion. This financial backing allowed the team to begin developing key tools and infrastructure to support its ambitious goals.

🔹 2020-2023: Growth, Experimentation, and Early Impact

The period between 2020 and 2023 was marked by intensive development, experimentation, and community engagement. During these years, EEP:

✅ Developed an advanced text editor to facilitate scholarly writing and reviewing.
✅ Launched over 12 open review journal projects, introducing innovative peer-review models.
✅ Digitalized and/or translated 100+ significant academic works, making them freely accessible.
✅ Expanded partnerships with universities, archives, and research institutions.
✅ Explored new journal formats, blending modern and classical academic approaches.

These efforts resulted in positive feedback from the academic community, with many scholars expressing enthusiasm for EEP’s vision. At the same time, dissatisfaction with traditional academic publishing continued to grow, reinforcing the need for alternative models—a gap that EEP sought to fill.

🔹 2023-2024: Preparing for a Major Relaunch

By 2023, the platform faced both new opportunities and challenges. While we managed to create an avant-garde for open-access and alternative publishing, several factors called for a strategic rethink:

🔸 The rise of competing open-access platforms modeled after the original website.
🔸 Confusion around the mix of classical and modern academic content on the platform.
🔸 The need for sustainable funding to ensure long-term viability.
🔸 The growing role of AI in academic publishing, requiring smart integration strategies.

To address these challenges, EEP secured new funding from UM6P Polytech and began working with a dedicated team of developers from the 1337 School. With this expanded team and a three-year budget for innovation, the platform entered a full redevelopment phase with the goal of a grand relaunch in Summer 2025.

🔹 2024-2025: The Path to Relaunch

EEP is currently in an intensive rebuilding phase, focusing on:

🚀 Launching Three New Platforms:

  • The Future of Science Network – A hub for open review, AI-assisted publishing, and global academic discourse.
  • LEGACY – A platform for exploring seminal texts with AI-driven tools and intellectual network mapping.
  • THESIS CENTER – A tool designed to streamline academic writing and standardize formatting for universities.

🛠 Developing AI-Powered Features:

  • Open review AI-assisted journal evaluation.
  • AI-generated philosopher personas for interactive learning.
  • Automated text formatting and document processing tools.

🌍 Expanding Partnerships & Community Engagement:

  • Strengthening international collaborations with leading universities.
  • Hosting conferences, symposiums, and podcasts on the future of academic publishing.
  • Building a sustainable funding model to ensure long-term viability.

EEP is now preparing for its Summer 2025 relaunch, where it aims to redefine the future of knowledge production and dissemination.

📢 The Future of Academic Publishing Starts Here

The journey of EEP from 2018 to 2024 has been one of constant evolution, innovation, and adaptation. What began as an experimental platform has grown into a global initiative to reshape scholarly communication.

With new tools, expanded funding, and a growing network of scholars, the next chapter is set to be the most impactful yet. Stay tuned for the grand relaunch in Summer 2025!
